ArchiWonderland Syndrome

“ArchiWonderland Syndrome” is a project developed by resident artist Harry Varnavas.

In ArchiWonderland Syndrome, Harry Varnavas explores spatial perception through a unique blend of architectural art and digital media. This four-month residency culminates in a layered exhibition that challenges viewers to engage with space and scale in transformative ways. The project initiates with an architectural painting, capturing intricate spatial compositions that serve as the foundation for deeper exploration. From this two- dimensional piece, small sections are isolated, magnified under a microscope, and meticulously scanned, allowing the artist to reveal hidden complexities within the image.

These magnified fragments are printed at large scale with vivid colors and dynamic lighting, inviting audiences to perceive space within the constraints of a flat plane. These high-definition prints highlight how color and light evoke the dimensionality and rhythm inherent in the architectural drawing. This progression from painting to print is complemented by an immersive VR component, where viewers can traverse the digital terrains created from these micro-scale scans. In VR, users experience the fragments as expanded landscapes, connecting shifts in scale with spatial memory and perception.

Through this exhibition, Varnavas’s artistic vision reshapes conventional architectural boundaries, utilizing scale transitions to foster a multi-sensory engagement with space, materiality, and perception. The outcome is a deeply experiential narrative of spatial exploration, merging architectural artistry with cutting-edge technology.
