ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Thinker Maker Space of CYENS presents “Compostable Offerings”, a workshop about biofabrication and rituals by resident artist Betiana Pavón.

‘Rituals introduce discontinuities in the structure of time. These interstices are endowed with meaning. The notions of time and space that ritual introduces are experienced by the actors as everyday realities; in other words, ritual becomes everyday and everyday becomes ritual’. Biofabrication is an innovative field that combines biology and new technologies to create living or biologically inspired materials, fabrics and structures; seeking to develop practical, sustainable and environmentally responsible solutions. In this workshop you will learn how to collect, select, treat and re-use your own waste; through different recipes we will develop biomaterials in different formats (100% compostable) with which each participant will be able to create their own offering to the earth. The aim of this workshop is to address the current problems regarding the management and use of waste in a circular way, offering creative solutions in connection with artistic practice.

Audience:

  • The workshop is open to everyone interested in the field of biofabrication.
  • No skills are required to attend the workshop.

Participants are encouraged to bring:

  • Some precious object that you have on your altar or that represents you.
  • Your most abundant food or organic waste in your environment and/or in your daily life
(Example: coffee waste, tea, fruit skins, eggshells, seaweed, etc).

Important: the waste must be dry, without moisture.

Workshop Breakdown:

  • Presentation and introduction to the workshop topics (Biofabrication, Altar, Offerings and Rituals)
  • Selection and processing of the waste provided by the participants
  • Demonstration and development of biomaterials (various recipes) by stations
  • Time for individual creation of the offerings
  • Group presentation, conclusion and closing
