Thinker Maker Space of CYENS presents “Ornate equation: The interplay of data and form”, a hands-on workshop by resident artist Calin Segal.
The core of the workshop involves a hands-on exploration of ‘sculptural storage devices’—the unique concept of embedding data into physical objects. To this end, we will provide participants with tutorials on creating shapes from code. Using Signed Distance Field equations and GLSL (OpenGL Shading Language), participants will learn how to generate dynamic, abstract shapes. By transforming these shapes using their own input data, participants will create unique sculptural objects, turning the abstract concept of data into a tangible and imaginative form. This practical aspect of the workshop not only teaches essential coding skills but also provides a new perspective on data storage and visualization.
Workshop audience:
The workshop will be open to Designers, Architects, Game Developers, Digital Artists & anyone who is interested in this specific topic.
Required skills:
Basic coding knowledge
What you will learn:
GLSL Coding, Graphic Language, 3D Printing
10:00-12:00 | Introduction to GLSL coding
12:00-12:15 | Break
12:15-13:15 | Introduction to Signed Distance Field

Registration for the workshop is required as limited spaces are available. Registration & participation are free.
My work explores the interplay between control and unpredictability, using mathematical models and algorithms to create dynamic and evolving compositions. Generative art brings me to the forefront of my creativity, where technology and art converge to create boundless possibilities for self-expression and imagination. I weave together the strands of reality and the fantastical to create my visual universe.
My work is driven by a desire to discover new and exciting ways of representing the world around us. I constantly look for ways to break down real-world phenomena into algorithms. It is my way of making sense of it abstractly, allowing a unique insight into our world. My work may result from mathematical models and algorithms, but it ultimately reflects my continuous pursuit of self-expression.
