“Water Movement Nicosia” is a project developed by resident artist Maurice Cazzolli.
Water Movement Nicosia is a site-specific interactive audiovisual installation that transforms Platia Dimarchias into a temporary urban water landscape. Building on the earlier water movement (2024), it invites passersby to engage with projected waves that respond to their movements. With state-of-the-art 3D sensing hardware and software, every step generates ripples and currents, turning simple motion into a moment of shared “water play” in a place where water is both scarce and precious.
A constant visual layer is shaped by real-time buoy data from Cyprus Subsea — specifically Chlorophyll a and temperature values from the surrounding sea. This ocean-data–driven surface is always present, making invisible marine conditions quietly visible within the city.
Movement also activates a second geography: field recordings of Tyrolean waters, which bring the sound of Alpine abundance into dialogue with Cyprus’s fragile water realities. The installation connects these contrasting water cultures, highlighting how water serves as a space for play, gathering, memory, and care.
By merging environmental data, sound, and public interaction, Water Movement Nicosia creates a poetic encounter between different water worlds — linking absence and abundance, scarcity and flow — while inviting moments of joy, reflection, and connection in the heart of Nicosia.

The public artwork Water Movement Nicosia has been commissioned by the Austrian Embassy Nicosia, markingthe 20th anniversary of its establishment in Cyprus, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus, the Thinker Maker Space at the CYENS Centre of Excellence, and the Nicosia Municipality. Augmenta and Rebeam support this project as official partners, offering software and hardware throughout the installation period.
