CYENS is hosting the first Work in Progress (WIP) showcase; an arts & technology focused initiative that brings together creatives and technologists – local and visiting – with the aim to initiate a dialogue between disciplines and establish future collaborations. The event is organised by CYENS Thinker Maker Space, ITICA MRG & Museum Lab MRG.

WIP will take place from the 1st of November to the 3rd of November and will present three clusters of projects by university students, cultural institutes and the CYENS teams. During the event, visitors will have the opportunity to join a series of Virtual Reality experiences along with lectures and workshops offered by industry experts.

All events will be open to the public throughout the duration of the event.
Due to Covid restrictions, lectures & workshops have limited spaces and registration is required.

Research & methods of art practice

Lecture by Rose Butler

DESCRIPTION

CYENS in collaboration with NeMe present a lecture by Rose Butler, discussing current research and demonstrating methods of art practice. The lecture will showcase various examples of selected video installations and multi screen works, alongside digital shorts and photography.

BIO

Rose is an artist, researcher and senior lecturer of Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam University, UK. She uses adapted technology and custom built software alongside early cameras and analogue technique to make interactive installations, single and multi-screen videos or large-scale photographs. Rose is interested in the physical and digital, visible but also invisible barriers that keep people alienated or impose power dynamics. Recent doctoral study considered new UK surveillance legislation (2016) through the use of and research into hidden cameras at the Stasi Film and Video Archives, Berlin. Rose is commencing new work in Cyprus in collaboration with Jeremy Lee and Kypros Kyprianou and in partnership with NeMe, Limassol. Rose will present selected works that introduce her current project.

LiDAR scanning and photogrammetry

Workshop by Jeremy Lee

DESCRIPTION

CYENS in collaboration with NeMe present a workshop by Jeremy Lee demonstrating LiDar scanning and photogrammetry. Participants will have the opportunity to explore various file types and software used within LiDar scanning. The workshop will deliver an overview of the different approaches in working within the field by presenting different project examples. During the workshop participants will be able to experiment and manipulate data and interact with numerous materials.

Critical Data

Lecture by Manuela Naveau

DESCRIPTION

A calculated world is based on the lifecycle of data: collecting, categorizing, storing, analyzing, sharing, reproducing and (eventually) deleting. Activities initiated by ourselves or others – but always with the actually deeply human goal of generating more knowledge about ourselves and sharing it with others. However, something has gone wrong in the optimization processes of our world-machines, because the representation of our life and environment in digital data, a thinking in calculations and algorithms and a great trust in technology prevents us from understanding our world noetically. If we don’t want to leave it to industry and marketing, we need a counterculture: we are appropriating the term Critical Data and exploring it in the context of a collaboration between the University of Art and Design Linz / Department Interface Cultures and the CYENS Centre of Excellence in Nicosia. What is critical data in the context of a healthy society and environmentally friendly strategies, in the context of a time-critical art?

BIO

Univ.-Prof. Mag.a Manuela Naveau, PhD, is a curator and scholar. Since 2002, she has been intensively observing developments in media art and digital art during her activities at Ars Electronica Linz, where she established and operationally managed the Ars Electronica Export Department together with Artistic Director Gerfried Stocker. Teaching assignments at Paris Lodron University in Salzburg, the Vienna University of Technology and Danube University Krems followed. Since October 2020, Manuela Naveau has been a university professor for Critical Data at the Interface Cultures Department of the Kunstuniversität Linz. Her book “Crowd and Art – Art and Participation on the Internet” was published by transcript Verlag in 2017. The book is based on her dissertation, for which she received the Award of Excellence of the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy in 2016. Since 2020 Manuela Naveau is the director of the Kunstuni Campus during the Ars Electronica Festival and co-initiator of the AKADEMIE DER GEDANKEN.
